Sports are an integral part of Auburn. Though they do not have a professional sports team, the university sports team, called the Tigers and are known to participate in several football, swimming, baseball, diving, women's golf and basketball. They are a part of the NCAA and also in the Western Division of the South Eastern conference. Auburns period of growth began in 1955 when the student crowd began to filter in to the city. This growth phase lasted until the 60's and saw the growth of the city extend beyond its original boundaries extending the city by approximately 24 square miles. Auburn became well connected with all the major cities in Alabama with the construction of the Interstate85 and consequently opened this small town to more sporting activities like football and also developed its tourism economy.
